Keyword research has a reputation for being expensive and complicated. It is neither. The paid tools are convenient, but the core of good keyword research is a way of thinking, not a subscription.

Here is a workflow you can run today with nothing but a browser.

Start with the questions your customers already ask

Open your support inbox, your sales call notes, and any community where your audience hangs out. Write down the exact phrases people use. These are keywords with built-in intent, because a real person needed the answer badly enough to type it.

Mine autocomplete and "People also ask"

Type a seed phrase into Google and watch the autocomplete suggestions. Then scroll to the "People also ask" box and the "Related searches" at the bottom. Each one is a real query, ranked by demand. Collect 20 to 30 of them.

Judge intent before volume

A keyword with 200 searches and clear buying intent beats one with 20,000 searches and none. Ask what the searcher wants: to learn, to compare, or to buy. Match the page you would build to that intent.

Group into clusters, not one-offs

Cluster related queries around a single topic. One thorough article that answers a cluster of related questions will outrank ten thin pages that each chase one keyword.
